Approximately 150 Near North student leaders from the board’s seven secondary schools will have an opportunity to expand on their leadership skills as they participate in various activities to help build trust, communication and teamwork skills during a two-day student leadership conference, Live Lightly – Lead Often, on Thursday, October 14th and Friday, October 15th, 2010 at Glen Bernard Camp in Sundridge.

Stephen Hepburn, Grade 12 student at Almaguin Highlands Secondary School believes that a leadership conference for students is vitally important. He states “often students don’t see the validity of going to class or participating in extracurricular activities because they don’t realize their own leadership potential and the strength of their own student voice.” Noah Severino, also a Grade 12 student at Almaguin Highlands is looking forward to working with students from across the board and anticipates, “a positive learning experience and an overall awesome time.”

The Near North District School Board’s Student Senate has worked hard planning this conference. The event will include many student-centered activities such as a low ropes course, a fireside coffee house and reflections on the value of their student voice and how they can use lead in a positive and powerful way as a student connected learning network.
