WSS Principal appointed Minister of Ed’s Reference Group

The Near North District School Board is pleased to announce that Widdifield Secondary School Principal, Mr. Lucio Pavone (pictured above), has been appointed to serve a two-year term on a new consultative body, established by the Minister of Education: the Minister’s Principal Reference Group. Mr. Pavone travelled to Toronto for the group’s first meeting on October 5, 2010.

The Minister’s Principal Reference Group was established to provide insight, feedback, advice, and recommendations on various aspects of the role of the principal. The Minister is seeking the reference group’s feedback on other ministry initiatives affecting schools, students and the role of principals. This information is intended to reflect the individual experiences and perspectives of principals and vice-principals. The Minister identified four main goals related to the role of the reference group:

 Increase the ability of principals and vice-principals to perform their key function as the instructional leader in schools

 Increase the voice of principals and vice-principals in the education system

 Improve the training and support provided to principals and vice-principals

 Improve respect for the roles of principals and vice-principals.

“It is very rewarding to see that Lucio is being recognized by the Province for the leadership and dedication which he has demonstrated in our Board” said Heli Vail, Director of Education. "Mr. Pavone has been a principal with the Near North District School Board for 7 years. The Near North District School Board is grateful to have Lucio, and colleagues like him, in its employ."
