The fall season is one of the most popular times of the year for Off-Road recreational vehicle users. The Ontario Provincial Police is reminding riders to exercise caution and abide by basic safety rules when out operating ATVs. During the seasonal hunt when Off-Road Vehicle use is at its peak, OPP officers across the province are uniting with other enforcement partners to ensure safe Off-Road vehicle practices. Officers will be conducting patrols on area trails and rural roadways within the Province.

Contributing factors to off-road vehicle fatal crashes typically involve; alcohol consumption, no helmet, rider inexperience, and aggressive operation. Similar to automobiles, operating an ATV under the influence of alcohol is unlawful and can result in significant penalties, such as having your driver’s license suspended or even a jail term. Off-Road Vehicle operators found without a required helmet may face enforcement action. An approved safety helmet is for operator protection, it can save one’s life.

Additionally, surplus weight on the rear cargo rack can cause the ATV to tilt backwards when manoeuvring up hills with. Adhere to the manufacturers load recommendations.

Tragically, twelve recreational vehicle users have lost their lives in off-road vehicle related crashes in Ontario this year. The absence of effective safety equipment and abuse of alcohol were underlying factors in many of these tragic events. By exercising caution and following basic safety rules, off-road vehicle injuries and deaths can be averted.
