The North Bay and District Hospital Foundation announced exciting changes to the 4th annual Our Hospital Walk/Run which takes place on October 17th.

This year the event has changed the location from the Waterfront to the hospital grounds in order to offer the community a closer look at how the grounds of the new North Bay Regional Health Centre are taking shape.

“Well first of all it gives people the opportunity to come on to the grounds, I think everyone’s been so curious about coming to the grounds of the new hospital,” explains Nancy Jacko, Our Hospital Walk/Run Marketing Committee Chair of the location change.

“The other thing is we're really celebrating Lynn Johnson's support, she's supported the campaign of the foundation and she's supporting also this walk run other parts and things in the hospital as well.”

“And the other thing is we are also trying to promote the idea that the hospital is about wellness not only illness and that we want to include children as well as adults in our walk/run.”

One way the hospital is engaging children to the walk is by using April Patterson the character from Lynn Johnston the Creator of For Better or For Worse. In concert with the Our Hospital Walk/Run area children have the opportunity to take part in the April & Friends Walk. The event is a supervised activity for children 18 months to 8 years of age and runs while their parents participate in the Walk/Run.

Officials say instead of a registration fee, children can collect pledges and for children who collect $20 in pledges will receive a plush Farley Dog and for children who collect $40 or more they will receive both a Farley Dog and an autographed book by Lynn Johnson 'Farley Follows His Nose'.

The money raised goes to the foundation's Urgent Needs Fund and Jako says with ever changing technology in the health field the regional healthcare facility always has a long list of needs.

“We make equipment lists for the hospital, all through, that's what's required and from that list the foundation then purchases those pieces of those very needed equipment for all areas of the hospital.”

“What they do is take our capitol equipment list and then they prioritize and certain times there are people who want put money towards certain things. They may have had a loved one in the critical care, they may have had pediatric experience, they may have had palliative (care) we just have hosts and hosts of equipment on all of those lists that we need. Equipment runs out and it needs updating so there is always something on those lists.

The event will see 2 km participants go around the outer ring road that surrounds the facility, while the 5 km route will extend down College Drive to Gormanville and return to the facility, while the 10 km route will have participants do 5 km trek twice.
