North Bay City Mayoral candidate Al McDonald, announced plans today to create a Mayor’s special committee for the purpose of studying the issue of green space in the city of North Bay.

“Our parks and green space add to our quality of life,” said McDonald.

McDonald told those in attendance that he has heard from citizens across the community that green space and park lands are an important issue.

“As we move forward as a community I would like input from interested parties regarding what is important to them as far as green space goes and I believe the best way to facilitate an open dialogue is through a dedicated committee,” said the mayoral hopeful.

McDonald revealed in his plan that the committee will be subject to a one year sunset date and will be required to report their findings to council. The sunset date will be firm and will be based on a specific time line of one year from the date the committee is established.

If elected, McDonald is hopeful councilors will support the other piece of this policy, that being a moratorium on the sale of municipal park lands. The moratorium is proposed so the committee will be in a better position to discharge its mandate.

McDonald said, “Sometimes we need to take a step back in order to go forward and the creation of the committee combined with a moratorium provides an opportunity to do just that.”
