Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement, to mark the anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks:

“The tragic events of September 11 remain fresh and clear in all of our hearts and minds. The memory of that day continues to evoke horror and sorrow in all Canadians, despite the passing of nearly a decade. Today, we honour those who lost their lives during those senseless and cowardly attacks, including 24 Canadians.

“On the anniversary of 9/11, our thoughts also turn to all those who are still grieving over the loss of their family members, friends and neighbours.

“Sadly, the threat of terrorism is still very much a global reality, including right here at home. No country is immune. International and home-grown radical groups continue to pose a real danger to our safety, and we must remain ever-vigilant.

“Since September 11th, 2001, Canada has taken considerable action to prevent and respond to terrorist threats, and this responsibility continues to be a priority of our Government. Our Government has been taking decisive action to end the financing of terrorist groups, stop their operations and help protect and defend the innocent from terrorist threats and attacks.

“Today, as we honour the victims of 9/11 and their loved ones who still grieve, we also honour the brave men and women who put their lives on the line every day to help prevent such a terrible tragedy from happening again.”
