Labour Day Weekend which starts on Friday, September 3rd and ends on Monday, September 6th, 2010 will see people travelling to their cottages or their favourite vacationing spot as this is our last long weekend of the summer. North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), which includes North Bay, Mattawa and Powassan Detachments, anticipates an increase in traffic.

“Being prepared and alert at all times is key to a safe arrival wherever your destination maybe” states Detachment Commander – Staff Sergeant Irving Sloss.

Motorists are urged to practice safe driving by reducing their speed, remaining calm in stressful situations, using their signals, always checking their blind spots, keeping a safe distance from other vehicles and being courteous to other drivers. Speeding, tailgating, aggressive driving such as weaving in and out of traffic and not yielding the right-of-way can lead to collisions.

"A moment’s inattention can result in injury and death," states Inspector Mark Andrews - Traffic and Marine Commander, North East Region. "Drivers are drifting across the centre line for whatever reason, possibly distraction or fatigue and slamming into oncoming traffic. Drivers seem to let down their guard in sunny weather and are less alert to what's going on around them."

As of August 25, 2010, 43 people have died in the North East Region on OPP patrolled roadways, two being in the North Bay Detachment area.

The OPP remains relentless in saving lives and reducing injuries on Ontario highways, trails and waterways. This weekend won’t be any different and traffic safety will be our focus with particular attention to drinking and driving, excessive speed, aggressive driving and non-use of seatbelt.

Marine patrols are scheduled on all main bodies of water within our detachment area. Play your part by making safety your first responsibility when boating. About 90% of people who drown in recreational boating incidents are NOT wearing a lifejacket/personal floatation device. So find one that suits your needs and wear it! Drinking and operating your vessel is against the law. Lastly, ensure you have the prescribed equipment for the vessel size and configuration. You may obtain more information from your local OPP Detachment. You can also contact The Boating Safety Info Line at 1-800-267-6687 or on the web at: www.ccg-gcc.gc.ca.
