The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities announced today that the appointment of Minister Rick Bartolucci is exceptionally good news for Northern Ontario.

President of FONOM, Kapuskasing Mayor Al Spacek, praised Bartolucci’s commitment to the North. “Minister Bartolucci is a through- and- through Northerner who has been advocating for the North throughout his political career. With experience as former Minister of Northern Development and Mines, his knowledge of northern issues is second to none. We are very much looking forward to working with this minister in order to strengthen northern communities and find opportunities for supportive and affordable housing”, said Spacek.

Minister Rick Bartolucci began his political career as a Sudbury city councillor. Since 1995, he has been elected for four terms to the Ontario Legislature, serving as Minister of Northern Development and Mines, as well as Minister of Safety and Correctional Services. Bartolucci was born and raised in Sudbury and educated at Laurentian University. He was an educator for 30 years prior to his entry into politics.

Vice President of FONOM, Lou Turco of Sault Ste. Marie, echoed Spacek’s endorsement of the recent appointment of Bartolucci to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “Our goal is aligned with that of the Ministry….to create dynamic local economies and to promote safe and strong communities, as well as a full range of housing needs for Northern Ontario. It’s a great fit for us, because FONOM represents a full 25% of Ontario’s communities.”

The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) represents 111 cities, towns and municipalities throughout Northeastern Ontario. FONOM acts in an advocacy role in relation to political and economic issues that are of concern to Northerners.
