15-year-old Calvin Green of Callander (pictured with Premier Dalton McGuinty), has launched his new “Walk A Mile” program. This program will see 100 pair of new, top-quality shoes given free-of-charge to children in need in our community in time for back-to-school.

Green is best known as the creator of Cal’s Club, a local program that has provided more than 1,300 birthday bags including cake mix, icing, candles and a new toy to needy area children.

“I volunteer at the North Bay Food Bank, and I know that we see over 400 children each month. I am aware of really great programs out there that can provide back-to-school supplies, but I’m not aware of any that provide shoes” said Green.

“Shoes are really expensive, and some families find it hard to provide them when they are going through difficult times. I wanted to fill that gap. Kids from less fortunate families should also be able to participate in sports and run and play with their friends. They can’t do that without proper footwear,” Green added.

Green is distributing the shoes with the assistance of Andrew Greig at Foot and Sole, who has donated more than 40 of the 100 pairs of shoes available. Funding was also provided by the Toskan-Casale Foundation award secured by Widdifield students Jade Anderson and Caleigh Chirico.

The Walk a Mile Program is available to any person between the ages of 4 and 18 who is registered as a full-time student for the 2010-2011 school year. Applications are available at the North Bay Food Bank, or by request by sending an email to [email protected]. Closing date for applications is August 25, 2010.

Green founded Cal’s Club in 2006 at age 11, and now supplies birthday bags to 3 Food Banks as well as to the Nipissing Transition House and other agencies. For his efforts, he was named the WWE’s Canadian Community Champion in July 2008, and an Ontario Junior Citizen in 2009.

Applications are available only by attending at the North Bay Food Bank, or by sending an email to [email protected].
