At its regular Board meeting held on July 16, 2010 in Elliot Lake, the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities elected a new President for the coming term.

Al Spacek, Mayor of the Town of Kapuskasing since 2006, was unanimously acclaimed President by fellow Directors from across the North.

“I am looking forward to serving the citizens of Northern Ontario in an even greater capacity. It’s an extremely busy time for FONOM as we address the concerns of citizens and business when it comes to changes in Forest Tenure, the Mining Modernization Act, Woodland Caribou Conservation, Land Use Planning and many more issues that will affect the lives of Northerners”, said Spacek. “Our goal is to ensure sustainability in the North, to advocate for the kind of changes that are needed to solidify our economic future and that of our children,” said Spacek.

Born and raised in Kapuskasing, the Model Town of the North, Spacek is a well-known businessman in the community and a strong proponent of economic development both in his community and across the North.

While serving on many local committees and boards, Spacek also serves as Director of the Northern Mayors’ Action Group, on the Ministry of Transportation’s Air Advisory Panel and as a Director on the Board of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario. He has previously served as a Director of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund and on the Executive of the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Mac Bain, Past President of FONOM, stated that the North will be well served by the new President of FONOM.

“Al is an energetic and hard-working member of our Board with a great passion for the North who brings extensive experience and knowledge to the table. He is an excellent advocate for all things northern”, said Bain.

Lou Turco was also elected to the position of 1st Vice-President. Turco is a well-known City Councillor in the City of Sault Ste. Marie and a great booster and spokesman for that area, with a special interest in economic development.

Tom Laughren, Mayor of Timmins, was elected as 2nd Vice-President. Laughren has been a strong promoter of issues facing Northerners, particularly in the areas of mining and forestry.

FONOM’s membership is made up of 111 municipalities, towns and cities in Northeastern Ontario. FONOM acts in an advocacy role in relation to political and economic issues of concern in Northern Ontario.
