SAULT STE. MARIE – What does the future look like for northern communities? The best people to ask are our children. That is why Northern Credit Union is launching the 2011 Northern Futures Community Calendar contest. Kids and young adults from junior kindergarten to high school are being asked to draw a picture of what they believe the future holds for the north, giving them the chance to start investing in their own future education.

The initiative comes off of the success of last year’s calendar contest which, for the first time, included kids and their perspective on life in the north. This year, the contest is being expanded to include high school students.

The contest kicks-off the back-to-school and RESP seasons, with the top elementary and high school submission each winning a $1,000 RESP contribution. Runner-ups from each category will each win a $500 RESP contribution, with all four prizes being awarded by Northern Credit Union.

“Investing in the financial success of our children is the first step towards building financial futures for northern Ontario,” said Al Suraci, CEO of Northern Credit Union. “We are committed to helping our members invest in their future. This also means educating their children to learn the value in budgeting for their own post-secondary education and the responsibility that comes with it.”

The contest, with depictions of the future of northern communities through the eyes of children and teenagers, begins August 3, 2010 with submissions ending on September 22. Voting will take place online from October 4th to the 17th, followed by an announcement of the four winners. To enter the contest, or for more information, parents can contact their local Northern Credit Union branch or visit www.northernkidscalendar.com. Twenty-four drawings will be selected and featured in the 2011 Northern Futures Community Calendar, including the four winners.
