North Bay - Activities which could pose a threat to the sources for municipal drinking water in Callander, Mattawa, North Bay, Powassan, South River and the cluster of wells in Trout Creek have been identified in the Draft Assessment Report which is now available from the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority for review and comment.

An Open House will be held at the Callander Legion on August 19 and at the Friendly Circle Senior’s Drop-in in South River on August 24, from 5 pm to 8:30 pm at each location. A brief presentation will be made at 7pm highlighting the findings for each municipality.

Over the past few years, scientists have been working to identify the vulnerable areas surrounding municipal drinking water intakes and wells in these communities and have determined which specific activities could contaminate the water if they were to take place. These studies have been previously shared at public meetings in each community.

The Report is available online at www.actforcleanwater.ca. Hard copies are available for viewing at the municipal offices and libraries for each of the communities that have municipal water systems as well as at the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority office 15 Janey Ave., North Bay.

The public can submit comments up until August 31, 2010 online at [email protected], by attending one of the Open Houses or by mail to the attention Barb Groves, Chair, North Bay-Mattawa Source Protection Committee, 15 Janey Ave., North Bay, ON P1C 1N1.
