Shortly before 11pm Wednesday firefighters from three stations responded to as house fire at a four-plex on Wyld Street.

Details are limited but officials with the North Bay Fire Department confirmed they are dealing with a fatality.

“At 22:49 our North Bay Fire Department received a call for smoke in the building from one of the residents,” says Deputy Fire Chief Brian Hunt.

“Our crews responded and on their arrival they had a building here fully involved, a very hostile fire, intense heat and lots of flame so they conducted an offensive attack right away to get on to the fire, and of course started to do search and rescue.”

“We believe we have one fatality at this time but it is currently under investigation by our fire prevention division and North Bay Police Services. The Fire Marshal’s Office has been notified and we are just waiting for verification of that from them,” explains Hunt.

The Deputy Fire Chief confirmed that initially two stations responded but then a second alarm was put in for the third station to respond.

“We had all three stations committed and at that point the incident commander put in a third alarm for a back up crew to come in and support us.”

He notes that the current heat wave makes it very difficult on fire crews battling a blaze and that it is necessary to have additional crews on site to help support in the effort.

“As you can appreciate you’ve got a hot fire to start with but then you have heavy humidity and you’ve got very, very hot conditions. Our guys are suited up with their personal protective gear on ... it really taxes our guys.”

“It is so important that we get there we make our initial attack and we rotate the crews through as much as possible to keep them hydrated and to keep them rehabbed.”

“But as you’ve seen earlier these guys just don’t stop sometimes you have to order them to go to rehab because they won’t give up till they’ve got it. And they did an outstanding job here tonight to get that fire under control as quickly as they did in these types of conditions. You can appreciate when it is that hot how they feel they can get spent pretty quick.”

VCARS was called to the scene just after 12 a.m. to help with tenants from another apartment in the home who have been displaced.

Hunt says crews will remain on scene for the majority of the night.

“(We’ll) probably keep a couple of crews here just so again we can rotate the guys through, and they’ll be in and out of the building checking for hotspots checking for extension.”

“Once we’re pretty satisfied we don’t have (any) more problems with the building we’ll have a second crew come in and sit on the building for the remainder of the night until the Fire Marshall gets here, and until the investigators are proceeding with what they have to do.”
