News Release

********************

Mattawa’s new Catholic French language secondary school will be called École secondaire catholique Élisabeth-Bruyère, in honour of the founder of the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa. The name will commemorate the exceptional contribution of the Sisters of Charity to the education, health and well-being of the residents of the Mattawa region. This is the order of nuns that founded the Mattawa Hospital in 1878.

The ad hoc committee responsible for seeking suggestions and recommending possible names for the new school was made up of students, parents, staff, and members of the community. The committee received 613 responses to its survey. Of these, 35 were repeat submissions and 67 were received after the closing date. This left 511 responses to be considered by the committee in working out its recommendation to the board. Out of these 511, 282 were in favor of the name École secondaire catholique Élisabeth-Bruyère.

Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord trustees received the recommendation of the ad hoc committee at an Extraordinary Meeting of the board which was held on Tuesday, June 29, and adopted a resolution naming the school. “Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord would like to thank those who submitted names and those who responded to the survey regarding the three choices. The number of responses is indicative of the enthusiasm felt in the community with regards to this construction project”, stated Cynthia Roveda, Director of Education at Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord.

The new Catholic French language secondary school will serve students from grades 7 to 12 in the municipalities of Bonfield, Calvin, Mattawa, Mattawan, Papineau-Cameron, and Rutherglen. Construction is being supervised by J. L. Richards & Associates Limited. The contemporary design of the new school reflects the modern world as well as a vision for the future of the youth of the community, but also includes elements reminiscent of the old Mattawa Hospital and the rich and diverse history of the Mattawa region. École secondaire catholique Élisabeth-Bruyère will open its doors in September 2011.
