Two Powassan men have been fined $1,700 for illegally hunting deer.

Andrew Whitelock pleaded guilty to unlawfully discharging his firearm from the roadway and possessing wildlife that was unlawfully killed. He was fined $1,000.

Craig Whitelock pleaded guilty to failing to immediately attach the seal to the deer and transporting wildlife that was unlawfully killed. He was fined $700. The firearms will be returned upon payment of the fines.

An investigation revealed that on November 4, 2009, the men were driving on Memorial Park Drive in Powassan when two deer ran across in front of them. Andrew Whitelock got out of the vehicle, stood on the side of the road and shot one of the deer as it stood in the ditch. The deer died on private property and was recovered by the two men. A passerby advised them that they were on private property. The men quickly loaded the deer into the vehicle and transported it to their residence, where it was eventually tagged.

Justice of the Peace Monique Seguin heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, North Bay, on May 20, 2010.
