Two Astorville men have been fined and one also received a hunting licence suspension for hunting a calf moose during the closed season.

Gilles Durocher pleaded guilty to hunting a calf moose during the closed season. He was fined $5,000 and had his hunting licence suspended for one year. His crossbow and the moose were forfeited to the Crown. His all-terrain vehicle will be returned to him upon payment of the fine.

David Durocher pleaded guilty to transporting illegally killed wildlife and was fined $750.

An investigation revealed that on October 18, 2009, Gilles Durocher was hunting deer from his tree stand in Chisholm Township when he saw a cow and calf moose. Although the moose season was closed, he killed the calf moose with his crossbow. David Durocher helped him carry the moose home. The calf moose was shot in Wildlife Management Unit 48, where a valid moose licence and a calf validation tag are required to hunt calf moose.

Justice of the Peace Monique Seguin heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, North Bay, on May 20, 2010.
