NORTH BAY – Summer is one of the most popular times of the year for off-road enthusiasts and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding riders to exercise caution and follow basic safety rules when operating off-road vehicles. Snowmobile, ATV and Vessel Enforcement Teams (SAVE) and OPP officers across the province are working with MNR Officers and Municipal Policing partners to ensure enthusiasts are complying with laws and respecting private property.

Investigations into off-road vehicle collisions have shown that alcohol consumption, lack of experience, high speed and overall carelessness are contributing factors in severe injuries and deaths associated with this outdoor activity.

Driving an off-road vehicle under the influence of alcohol is a criminal matter that can result is loss of license, heavy fines and/or jail sentences. The Off-Road Vehicles Act of Ontario specifies that an operator must wear a helmet unless the vehicle is driven on property owned by the person driving the vehicle. Any use of off-road vehicles on Crown Land trails or commercial trails requires the rider to wear a helmet. Operators who do not wear their helmets are at a much higher risk of serious injury or death in the event of a collision

Off-road vehicles are manufactured in many configurations. Ensure that you are not carrying more passengers than the machine was engineered for. Vehicles operating on low pressure bearing tires are less predictable in their handling and have a higher rollover potential. Aftermarket modifications, including rest seats, change the handling and center of gravity on a machine. Do not exceed manufacturers load recommendations.

Tragically, 3 persons have already needlessly lost their lives in off-road vehicle accidents this year. Use of proper approved helmets, riding in a safe and responsible manner and avoiding unpredictable terrain will minimize risk and ensure that enthusiasts continue to have access to trails.

The OPP are committed to having a sustained presence on Ontario’s trails. Please ensure that you are carrying vehicle registration and insurance documents at all times and have an off-road vehicle plate affixed to the machine. Play safe, play sober and respect private property.
