Senior high school students from Almaguin Highlands S.S., Chippewa S.S., Parry Sound High School, West Ferris S.S., and Widdifield S.S. enjoyed a day of competition at the Senior Math Contest at Nipissing University on May 7th.

Up to ten students from each school competed on each problem set. Each problem set was preceded by a mathematics lesson, designed to review the topic and introduce some new concepts that may not be part of the current math curriculum. The teams used collaborative problem solving techniques to create one set of solutions for each challenging problem set.

Widdifield Secondary School won the math challenge. Prizes included a $500 surprise scholarship for each school attending the competition and a $150 first place prize given to the winning school. Team members from Widdifield included: Lexie Bullock, Anthony Butt, Roman Campbell, Naomi Cole, Jane Ferguson, Mitchell Haslehurst, Greg Katsuno, Luke Kilroy, Keith Pike, Teegan Preston, Varun Ratra, Katrina Rees, Nate Swain and Imaan Waja.

John Burns, a teacher at Widdifield Secondary School and chair of the organizing committee expressed appreciation to the coaches, volunteer markers and especially Nipissing University for providing lunch, snacks, and prizes to the competitors.
