Not every school can brag they have a plane

It was a banner day for West Ferris Secondary School and students in the aviation program as they received a major gift from Canadore College.

The college delivered a Zenair Model CH250 aircraft to provide students with indispensable hands-on training as well as spark interest in the students interested in pursuing a career in the aviation industry.

Former West Ferris student and current Canadore aviation student Kory Raycraft joked telling BayToday that the plane came three years to late. But he agrees with all parties that having the plane at the school will definitely aid in the students development.

Don Dell, who teaches the program at West Ferris, says the students are already in an elite group as only four high schools in Ontario have an aviation program, but having a plane on site will definitely give the students a further advantage if furthering their education in the aviation field.

"Canadore College's Aviation program is pleased to be donating this Zenair aircraft to West Ferris Secondary. As an aviation school, we have first-hand knowledge of how challenging it is to stay current with aircraft training aids," says Darrin Caron, Canadore College's Acting Academic Vice President.

"We know how important donations are to our program, and we are pleased to be in a position to be able to support a local high school in this way. The aviation industry is important to both North Bay and Canadore College, and we are pleased to know this donation will further promote careers in this sector and enhance the positive relationship we have fostered with West Ferris."
