North Bay Walks -- You're Invited to a Forum on on Creating a more Walkable & Bikeable Community Monday, May 3rd, 7 pm, Upper Gallery, Discovery North Community Museum

We are pleased to invite you to our Walkable Communities public forum on May 3rd to hear from a leading expert about the multiple health, environmental, transportation, economic, and social benefits to our residents and our community when we improve our public space and active transportation facilities, specifically the conditions for walking.

Our featured speaker will be Gil Penalosa, Executive Director of the Canadian non-profit organization 8 – 80 Cities. Gil is passionate about improving quality of life for all by encouraging access to great public space. His presentations are in demand around the globe. A former Commissioner of Parks, Sport, and Recreation for the city of Bogota, Columbia, Gil collaborates as a senior consultant for the renowned Danish firm, Gehl Architects. He is also a senior advisor with New York City’s Project for Public Spaces and serves on the board of directors of the American Trails and City Parks Alliance.

A brief presentation will also be given by Green Communities Canada about the International Charter for Walking which is being signed by communities large and small across the country as part of planning for a healthy and sustainable future. There will be an opportunity for community members to share their thoughts and ideas and ask questions.

This session is organized by Northwatch as a launch to our North Eastern Ontario Active Transportation Initiative, in collaboration with several local partners, including Discovery Routes, Greening Nipissing and GreenSpace North Bay, and in partnership with Ontario Communities walkON, a project that aims to change the current social paradigm so that walkable communities are the cultural and social norm across Ontario.

The forum will be held Monday, May 3rd, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the Upper Gallery, Discovery North Community Museum, 100 Ferguson Street, North Bay.

RSVP by Friday, April 30th by emailing [email protected] or calling 497 0373.
