The Near North District School Board is pleased to announce that the Parry Sound High School Senior Envirothon Team has won for the third year in a row at the regional Envirothon competition while the Junior team received top marks in the Soil category and placed 5th overall.

The multi day event is an opportunity for students to incorporate what they have learned in books and the classroom to interact with nature, develop friendships and take part in friendly competition with like minded peers. The teams are made of 5 students, and each became an expert in one of five categories: Forestry, Wildlife, Aquatics, Soils, and Protection of Groundwater; but their continued success at competition is a result of their combined efforts.

The group prepared by reviewing the study material provided on the Ontario Envirothon website www.ontarioenvirothon.on.ca/index.html during lunch hour team meetings and through independent study. The students also used the event as an opportunity to meet with experts to learn us how to use specialized equipment.

The Team’s next competition is the Provincial Envirothon May 5th-8th at the Tim Horton Onondaga Farms in St. George, Ontario. At the provincial competition students will take part in outdoor workshops, find solutions to environmental problems, explore career opportunities in the field of natural resources, and improve the environment.

The Near North District School Board would like to congratulate the Parry Sound High School Envirothon Team for their continued dedication to the environment and wish you the best of luck at the provincial competition.
