There have been three new fires in the East Fire Region since April 19.  Cochrane 3 and Parry Sound 3 have both been called out.  Sudbury 11 is under control and there are no problems anticipated.

The fire hazard is high in the central portion of the region that extends from Sault Ste. Marie to North Bay and south to Parry Sound.

The hazard in this area is expected to remain high into next week while areas north of Gogama and south of Parry Sound are expected to get minimal precipitation on Sunday.

Residents or cottagers conducting spring clean up should consider composting or chipping instead of burning. Always remember to contact your local fire department or municipal office before burning.

If found responsible for a forest fire, a person can be charged under the Forest Fires Prevention Act and/or be liable for the costs of suppressing the fire.

So far this year in the East Fire Region, there have been 37 fires burning over 147 hectares.

310-FIRE (3473) is the new, toll-free emergency forest fire reporting phone number across northern Ontario.  Early detection and reporting are essential to quickly managing forest fires. Having one number will make it easier and more efficient for Ontarians to report forest fire emergencies.  The number will operate north of the French and Mattawa Rivers.
