The King George Kodiaks put their best green feet forward Thursday in celebration of Earth Day.

The students spent the day learning the importance of environmental awareness while having fun. The students painted colourful butterflies after taking part in a butterfly workshop run by Greening Nipissing.

Grade two student Cade Cardinal says he learned that butterflies are an important component in keeping the earth healthy and had this message for other kids and their families.

Meanwhile, parent volunteer Jean Griffin says everyone from parents to teachers to the general public play a role in educating kids on environmental issues.

With paintbrushes at the ready, students of King George Public School celebrated Earth Day by engaging in activities hosted by Greening Nipissing.
“This is a great way for our students to gain environmental awareness and community involvement”, said King George acting Principal Michelle Mihaichuk.

Students explored the world of butterflies and the impact they have on the environment. Each classroom, and every student, had an opportunity to participate by decorating wooden butterflies made by Chippewa Secondary Intermediate students. Completed butterflies were then hung on the school fence.

“These events provide an excellent learning opportunity and councillor Mayne and I are happy to attend on behalf of the city”, said North Bay Councillor and Chair of Engineering, Environmental Services and Public Works, Judy Koziol. “The children are enthusiastic, their work is amazing, and I invite everyone to come down to King George to see this years butterflies and last years fish.”

Following a celebratory school assembly, King George Parent, Jean Griffin said it best, “Our children are the environmental stewards of the future. I’m proud King George continues to take a leadership role on this issue.”

“This has become a wonderful annual tradition for King George students”, said acting Principal Mihaichuk, “we are proud of our students and we applaud them for wanting to take care of their community”.

King George would like to thank all those who contributed to help make the Earth Day Event possible; Greening Nipissing, Chippewa Secondary Intermediate students, Gateway Home Hardware, Lakeview TIM-BR Mart, North Bay Toyota and Stewarts’ Decorating.
