As the North Bay YMCA gets set to host their Annual General Meeting Tuesday one member has been out drumming up support for his bid to become a board member.

As part of the AGM board elections are held and that is were the membership has an opportunity to decided who they want making decisions for the upcoming year.

Aside from being an interested member and huge supporter of the Y Titans swim club, Clem Eggert is a Squash enthusiast, coach and instructor who wants to see the sport continue and grow. A year ago a group of players made a request to have walls changed to glass back for teaching purposes as well as viewing opportunities for the public, Eggert recently received notice from the board president that the request was rejected.

Concerned that full support for the sport is not forthcoming from the board Eggert thinks a seat at the board table is one way to help foster the program for kids and at the same time attract adult players back to the Y.

“We started (kids squash) with the Y almost two years ago and the idea was to have glass walls to make the student program more viable, more kids, but one byproduct of that would have been increased revenue to the Y by having a lot more adult members come back that used to be members.”

“However the project wasn't going forward and my thoughts on everything is if you don't like how something is going get involved.”

Eggert says it is important to show leadership by getting involved to help the institution grow and thrive versus just sitting back and complain and so began his journey to his campaign to be elected to the board.

“For the past number of years the institution has adopted the practice of putting together a search committee to find interested individuals who would like to serve on the board and nominate them but as Clem Eggert has learned from the constitution any member can nominate another member to sit on the board.

“For the most part most people don't know that the way to get on the board is can be through a nomination meeting forwarded by the nomination committee or by another member,” he says.

“So therefore I think this year will be the first year in quite a few years from what I understand of a real election taking place.”

Eggert is asking members to come out to the Clarion Pinewood Park Tuesday at 5:30pm and support him by casting a ballot in his name.
