The Near North Student Robotics Initiative attended the Waterloo Regional FIRST Robotics Competition this past weekend. NNSRI won two awards at the Waterloo Competition and impressed the crowd with their intense spirit and gracious support of the event.  Team Captain, Alex Wilcox, was encouraged by the success of the team expressing that "We have built a dedicated team, diverse in our strengths, and it was definitely apparent throughout this event."

Team 1305 was seeded 4th after the qualifying matches and third during alliance selection. They won their quarter and semi final matches 2-0. Their alliance included Team 1310 Runnymede Robotics from Toronto and Team 3190 Mecha-51 of Montreal.

The Near North Student Robotics Initiative Team 1305, Ice Cubed, won the Regional Finalist Award for having been in the finals for the entire competition.  The team also won the Engineering Inspiration Award which celebrates outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering within a team’s school and community and is one of the top two awards at the competition.  This award comes with an invitation to the World Robotics Competition in Atlanta Georgia from April 14-17, 2010.  The team also received a Pin of Recognition for Industrial Safety.

The Near North Student Robotics Initiative will travel to Toronto this week to compete in the Greater Toronto Regional Event at the Hershey Centre. They continue to meet daily to plan strategy and travel plans. Of top priority will be a final fundraising drive to support the team on its quest at the World Championships in Atlanta.
