On Thursday March 25th, the entire student body at École secondaire catholique Algonquin was served a nutritious breakfast by their teachers as part of their school’s Breakfast Program.

“Our program is partially funded by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services through The Student Nutrition Program, which operates under the lead agency Community Living North Bay. Schools are expected to fundraise, receive donations of time, food and money from parents and community partners. Our breakfast program is run on a volunteer basis and is used daily by approximately 125 students,” says Greg Lefebvre principal of Algonquin.

The Student Nutrition Program supports communities to provide nutritious food to children and youth. The program supports the healthy growth and development of children and youth by providing universal access to nutritious meals and snacks at each site so students are ready to learn. Their focus is children and youth. Research has established that when children and youth arrive at school hungry, their capacity to learn is diminished. There are a variety of reasons why young people start their day hungry, including poverty, lengthy commutes, hectic family routines in the morning and children and youth not being hungry upon rising. Regardless of the reason, the program aims to support children and youth to be ready to learn. The Student Nutrition Program provides support to 38 schools in the District of Nipissing, 25 schools in Muskoka and 21 schools in the District of Parry Sound which in turn serves 9,000 participants.

The Breakfast program at École secondaire catholique Algonquin is available at no cost to all students each morning from 8:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.
