The 48th Annual North Bay Regional Science Fair (NBRSF) was a big success for the 32 projects and 43 participants who took part in this year’s competition held in the Education Centre gym today. Over 50 awards including medals, trophies, plaques, certificates and/or cheques were presented for the scientific initiatives of these brilliant students.

The highlight of the Awards ceremony was the designation of those who will represent the region at this year's Canada-Wide Science Fair 2010 to be held in Peterborough, Ontario, May 9 to 16. Four projects were selected for this exciting opportunity.

Congratulations go to:

Zahra Merali of West Ferris for her project “Tears, The Unhappy Triad” which won the Youth Science
Ontario Stepping Stone Award, the Nipissing University Travel Award, The Nipissing University
Scholarship, and a gold medal in the Senior Life Science category;

Jorrie Cull of Parry Sound High School for his project “Jorrie and the Beanstalk and Aloe Vera” which
won the Rotary Club of North Bay Award of Excellence, the Greater Nipissing Stewardship Council
Award, the Nipissing Naturalists Club Award of Merit, and a gold medal in the Intermediate Life
Science category;

Joseph Sexton of West Ferris for his project “Exercising Your Mind” which won the Trans Canada
Award, the Canadore College Scholarship, and a silver medal in the Senior Life Science category;

Jamil Merali of Silver Birches for his project “Moose Stop” which won the North Bay Regional
Science Fair Award of Merit, The Hydro One Energy Ambassador Award, the University of Ontario
Institute of Technology Award, the EIC / PEO Engineers’ Trophy, and a gold medal in the Junior
Engineering category.

Master of Ceremonies, Mitch Belanger, of the Fox, presented an award for the ‘Coolest’ project to
Morgan Lafontaine for her project ”Cell Phones: The Next Cigarette.”
