Students from the Seven Generations Education Institute in Fort Frances are visiting Canadore College next week for the unique opportunity to experience working in a first class culinary arts facility.

Seven students and the coordinator of the Culinary Skills program at SGEI will visit Canadore’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts on February 16 to 18. The visiting students will learn and work alongside Canadore Culinary Arts students providing a chance to network in a collaborative practice setting. The students will take part in four teaching labs presented by Chef Lawday and Chef Flynn over their three-day visit.

The first year culinary students, who come from Aboriginal communities in the Fort Frances region, will earn valuable lab experience and gain important exposure to a larger hospitality setting. The students will arrive on February 16 at 2 p.m.

SGEI is dedicated to excellence in lifelong learning and empowerment by providing community-based and student-centered learning opportunities for Aboriginal Peoples. Canadore College has had a partnership agreement with the Institute in Fort Frances, Ontario since 2004. The partnership plays a vital role in meeting the educational and training needs for its members and this collaborative experience between institutions encourages sharing opportunities in program delivery. Programs included in the partnership agreement are Indigenous Wellness and Addictions Prevention, Early Childhood Education, Police Foundations, Personal Support Worker and the newly added Culinary Skills - Chef program.
