A group of 11-13 year-old girls in Sturgeon Falls are going to make a difference in Haiti.

On February 22, 2010, the 1st Sturgeon Falls Pathfinders will be collecting new and used tarps, tents and blankets to send to Haiti. The collection will take place at Our Lady of Sorrows Church from 6:30-8pm.

“CFB North Bay has generously offered to take out tents, tarps and blankets down to the earthquake torn country,” says Guider Marci Becking. “The girls wanted to do something to help Haiti and this is a great way to get the community involved, help out people in need and also raise our profile in Sturgeon Falls.

The 1st Sturgeon Falls Pathfinder unit started in the fall of 2008 after a 12 year hiatus.

“We still had Sparks, Brownies and Guides in Sturgeon Falls, but there weren’t any leaders involved or interest from girls for a decade,” says Becking. “But we’re back – this year we have ten girls registered. We go camping, service projects and of course, sell Girl Guide cookies.”

The Tarps and Tents for Haiti project will help the girls earn their Canada Cord – the highest award that a Pathfinder can earn.

This year is Girl Guides of Canada’s 100th anniversary. Many special events will take place around the country to promote the organization and celebrate the milestone.

For more information on the Tarps and Tents for Haiti Project, please contact Marci Becking 753-9033.

Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada (GGC) is the original organization for girls in Canada. For 100 years, GGC has been providing girls with opportunities to explore new interests, develop new skills and make lasting friendships. Guiding gives girls the tools and resources to achieve greatness. www.girlguides.ca
