Issued to celebrate Black History Month, this stamp features William Hall who was the first black person, the first Nova Scotian and the first Canadian sailor to receive the Victoria Cross.

Born around 1825, Hall joined the British Royal Navy in 1852 and received British and Turkish medals during the Crimean War. In 1857, he volunteered to help relieve a besieged British garrison and fought against overwhelming odds until it was secured. For this outstanding display of bravery, Hall received the Victoria Cross.
