The Ontario government is funding pre-apprenticeship training in Nipissing in General Carpentry, to run in partnership with Canadore College. This project will help 16 participants develop the skills they need to qualify for and succeed in apprenticeship training. Canadore College is receiving $157,444 to provide pre-apprenticeship training in Nipissing.

Pre-apprenticeship training bridges the gap between the skills employers require and the learning or experience people who want to work as apprentices possess.

The government is investing more than $8 million in pre-apprenticeship training projects this year.

Among the 36 projects receiving funds, nine focus on youth, seven help people who do not have a Grade 12 education, three help Aboriginal peoples, and four help women begin careers in the trades.

“Canadore College is a leader in skilled trades training.  I’m pleased that Canadore is working with the Ontario government to help people develop the skills to succeed as an apprentice,” said Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing.

“Our plan is to strengthen Ontario’s apprenticeship and skilled trades system so that we will have the skilled workers we need to succeed in tomorrow’s economy. Investing in training that helps people prepare to become an apprentice is one step to achieving that plan,” said Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities John Milloy.

QUICK FACTS
