The local 2009 top newsmaker of the year is a team not an individual -- The Nipissing University Lakers Men's Hockey Team. The Lakers, who racked up 54 total points and 5 first place votes, caused quite a buzz in the city as they launched their first season with the OUA.
The taxpayer garnered 45 pts and 9 first place votes to take second place in the poll while third spot went to Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Jim Chirico. with 41 points and 4 first place votes.
Disgraced Mattawa funeral director Timmy Lynn Smith placed forth in the poll with 37 points and 1 first place vote while Canadian kings of comedy The Kids in The Hall received 26 points putting them putting the icons in fifth place.
The politicians got in on the action as Mayor Vic Fedeli placed sixth with 23 pts followed by MPP Monique Smith in seventh place with 18 points. The story surrounding the late Andrew Niland received 15 points putting him in 8th place.
The late Hub Fedeli placed 9th in the survey.
Pittsburgh Penguins Assistant Coach Mike Yeo who brought home the Stanley Cup this year rounded out the poll in 10th place.
