Sudbury – On the afternoon of December 21, 2009, Sudbury OPP officers received a report that 3 empty gun vaults along with other property had been found in the ditch on North Shore Road, Burwash Township (off Nepewassi Lake Rd., Estaire).

Officers attended the scene and further investigation lead them to the discovery of break, enters and thefts from five (5) cottages which are located on Hendrie Township Road in Burwash Twp., on Twin Bay Road, Hendrie Township and North Shore Road, Burwash Township which occurred sometime between 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 18, 2009 and 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 21, 2009.

A number of firearms were stolen from the recovered gun vaults and other gun vaults. The firearms are described as follows:

Colt M1911A1 US Army, 45 calibre handgun
Sureshot, 22 calibre rifle
Ruger 1022, 22 calibre rifle
Ruger Deerstalker, 44 calibre rifle
Cooey 840, shotgun, single shot
C60, 22 calibre rifle, bolt action
Remington Weatherby rifle, bolt action
Winchester 70 rifle, bolt action
Winchester, 3030 calibre rifle, lever action
Remington 742 Woodmaster rifle, semi-automatic
Mossberg 835 Ultimag Camo shotgun, pump action
Winchester 2200 shotgun, pump action
Winchester SuperX shotgun, semi-automatic
Remington 700 rifle, bolt action
Squiresbingham M20 rifle, semi-automatic
Stevens 58 shotgun, bolt action
Cooey 840 shotgun, single shot

Other un-recovered stolen property includes a “Stack-On” gun vault for long guns
(48” X 15”), a “Schwabb” 20” X 20” gun vault and a grey “Beach” toolbox.

Anyone who owns a cottage in this area is encouraged to attend and check their property to ensure they were also not victimized. If a break and enter is discovered, do not contaminate the scene and contact the Ontario Provincial Police immediately and wait for officers’ arrival. Officers are requesting the public’s assistance in solving these crimes.
