Powassan – The newly renovated kitchen facility officially was commissioned today thanks to a $63,900 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Monique Smith, Minister of Tourism and MPP for the Nipissing joined OTF Representative Carol Ann DiBartolomeo in congratulating Powassan Mayor, Bob Young at the official ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the Grand Opening of the Sportsplex Community Recreation Centre’s revamped kitchen facility.

“This grant is an investment in the future of the community of Powassan,” said Minister Smith.  “The Sportsplex is an important gathering place for the community and I am delighted to see that the Sportsplex’s kitchen has been redesigned and equipped.”

The OTF Grant was used to redesign and retrofit the aging kitchen area in the Sportsplex facility and support the installation of a rink apron at the Trout Creek Community Centre. “This grant has enabled us to provide a safe, modern kitchen area to our patrons for years to come,” said Mayor Young. “We wish to thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for its support in making this possible.”

Originally constructed in the 1970’s, the Sportsplex kitchen has served as the primary engine in fundraising efforts of local user groups such as the Powassan Minor Hockey Association and the Powassan and Area Figure Skating Club who hosted a successful “Fun Skate” on the weekend of November 28. The newly revamped kitchen includes the addition of two new electric ranges, a refrigerator, microwave as well as other amenities. The revitalized area also is equipped with a new range hood and fire suppression unit to ensure the safety of the users.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario.
