The AIDS Committee of North Bay & Area (ACNBA) marked the beginning of AIDS Awareness Week Wednesday by unfurling three panels from the Memory Project Quilt, Canada’s AIDS Quilt. The quilt will be on display throughout the city, including Nipissing University, WKP Kennedy Gallery and St. Andrews United Church.

Every two hours a Canadian becomes infected with HIV, there is no cure, there is no vaccine and all Canadians are likely at risk for HIV. The Canadian AIDS Society statistics show that there are 58,000 reported Canadians currently living with HIV/AIDS in Canada a sobering statistic that makes HIV/AIDS everyone's concern.

This year the AIDS Awareness Week theme message is ‘Leadership’ and today Kirk Cederwahl stepped up and led the team by talking about the effect AIDS has had on his life as a person living with the disease and a person affected by the disease.

Also taking a leadership role was Mayor Vic Fedeli who said it is important that the mayor of the city step up and do their part to remove the stigma associated with the disease.
