Monday night’s committee meeting of council saw an amendment to a 2003 smoking bylaw. The new version will see a 9-meter ban from main entrances on all municipal buildings, as well as shopping malls and apartment buildings with more than six units on a request basis.

The original draft recommendation saw a 4-meter ban, but Deputy Mayor, Peter Chirico didn’t think that was good enough.

“The smoke free Ontario act designates 9 meters for hospitals and long-term care facilities,” Chirico said. “So we wanted to be consistent.”
