A group of Nipissing Environment students have been supporting La Vase Portages by handing out book marks to fellow students at Nipissing University. After paddling the historical canoe route earlier this fall with Friends of La Vase Portages, group leader Kim Matthews felt she had to do something to get involved. The Environmental studies team came up with the idea of handing out canoe themed book marks with the petition web address for students to register their support.

They also set up laptops and a display table at the University to share information on the portages and access the petition. Their full presentation to fellow classmates takes place November 25 at the University.

North Bay City Council earlier this summer rezoned the property to allow aggregate extraction but have left the decision of any development setback to the Province.

The Voyageur Heritage canoe route is presently before the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines & Forestry who are in the process of granting a 21 year mine lease on shoreline adjacent to La Vase Portages. So far there has been no discussion of the matter by the MNDMF with either the public or interested First Nations.

To show your support for this ancient trade and travel route, the last remaining undeveloped section of La Vase Portages, you can write the Ministry at [email protected] or go online to support the petition at www.lavaseportages.com.
