The Near North District School Board Environment Committee will be hosting a Climate Change Student Symposium on Monday November 23rd at West Ferris Secondary School. The goal of the symposium is to promote increased awareness to climate change and sustainable living.

This unique student symposium will include over 600 Near North District School Board intermediate and secondary school students from all across our District.

Key note speaker David Noble is the founder and principal of 2degreesC, where for the last six years he has been trying to save the world from climate change! Prior to founding 2degreesC, David was a Visiting Scholar in Transboundary Environmental Policy to The University of Texas at Austin, and spent two years as an experiential- and adventure-based learning professional in Canada, US, Switzerland and Ecuador.

Students will participate in workshops throughout the day. Presentations will include information on:
• the Canadian Ecology Centre
• Renewable Energy and Climate Change
• Eating Locally
• How to Conduct a School Waste Audit
• Reducing Your Carbon Footprint
• The Effect of Climate Change on Species at Risk
• Vegetarianism and Climate Change
• Get Waste out of your lunch…and your life!
• Environmental Leadership
• Hungry for Change
• Living on the Edge (Surviving the 21st C)

The Environment Committee's purpose is two-fold: There is an overlap between the program for JK-12 and our Plant’s Administrative Guidelines to drive practice within our facilities. We will focus on 5 R’s: Re-cycle, Re-use, Re-duce, Re-think, and Re-fuse to create proactive student engagement regarding the environment and to motivate our students to be environmental leaders in their schools and community.

The Near North District School Board is please to be part of the 2degreesC tour, and to have the opportunity to provide this symposium to our students.
