The H1N1 situation continues to change and the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit is adapting daily. Due to the overwhelming response to the clinic on Monday, the location of the H1N1 vaccine clinic in North Bay tomorrow has been changed to Memorial Gardens.

“We are pleased the community has answered the call to get their H1N1 vaccine and to accommodate the demand for the vaccine, we are changing the location of the clinic,” said Dr. Jim Chirico, Acting Medical Officer of Health for the Health Unit. “The H1N1 situation changes daily and we have to adapt with it. On behalf of the Health Unit, I want to thank the Shriners Club for all their help in providing their space to us on short notice and the City of North Bay for allowing us to use Memorial Gardens tomorrow.”

The Health Unit states that the H1N1 virus is throughout the community and school absenteeism is at a record level. Based on the best scientific evidence at this time, schools will remain open, but will be reviewed based on individual circumstances (eg. supervision is an issue due to number of staff absent).

To prevent the spread of H1N1, keep children home from school if they are sick and stay home if you are ill as well. Get your H1N1 flu shot, wash your hands well and often, sneeze and cough into your sleeve, and disinfect common surfaces.

The H1N1 vaccination clinics from Monday to Friday this week will be open to specific “high-risk” groups:

• children between 6 months and less than five years of age

• household members and care providers of persons at high risk who cannot be immunized or may not respond to the vaccine

• pregnant women and women who gave birth within the last six weeks, in discussion with their health care provider

• First Nations people

• those under the age of 65 with chronic medical conditions like heart, lung or kidney disease, diabetes or who are extremely obese

• Health care workers

Clinics for high-risk people will continue:

• Tuesday, October 27 from 2 to 6 pm,
Health Unit office, Parry Sound Mall, 70 Joseph Street

• Wednesday, October 28 from 12 to 6 pm,
Memorial Gardens, Chippewa Street, North Bay

• Thursday, October 29 from 2 to 6 pm, Golden Age Club, 464 Poplar Street, Mattawa

• Friday, October 30 from 12 to 4 pm, Arena, Hall of Fame Room, 210 Clark Street, Sturgeon Falls (elevator access through the pool entrance)

The H1N1 vaccine for everyone else in the community will be held starting October 31. All dates, times and locations of the clinics are listed on the H1N1 Vaccine Clinic schedule available on our website at www.healthunit.biz. The schedule will also be in your local newspaper, posted throughout our communities, and clinics will be promoted on some local radio stations.
