Pedestrian bridge is officially open

Ontario continues to improve safety on Northern highways with the completion of a major initiative in North Bay.

A new pedestrian bridge has been built over Highway 11/17 in North Bay which will enable pedestrians and cyclists to cross the busy thoroughfare safely from the Frost Street area to the city core. Previously, people were walking and cycling on the highway right-of-way creating safety concerns.

“The new pedestrian overpass is a much appreciated safety improvement for residents of North Bay,” said Monique Smith MPP for Nipissing. “Our students can now gain safe access to their schools while avoiding the highway and residents will also benefit from the new accessibility.”

“Our government is working to improve northern transportation infrastructure to create new economic activity and jobs throughout Northern Ontario,” said Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry.

"Expanding and improving transportation infrastructure generates construction jobs and promotes economic growth in the north," said Jim Bradley, Minister of Transportation.


QUICK FACTS

 TeraNorth Construction and Materials completed the $3.7 million contract funded by the Northern Highways Program.

 The 2009 Ontario Budget committed $648 million in northern highway rehabilitation and expansion in 2009-2010.

 Investments in Northern Ontario’s highway infrastructure in 2009-10 will create an estimated 4,700 jobs.
