Children's Aid Society
News Release

*********************

In keeping wit the OACAS Purple Ribbon Campaign we and our sister societies are planning activities.

To begin the month, the Staff from the Children's Aid Society for the Districts of Nipissing and Parry Sound met and formed their own ribbon. With the assistance of Lance from Gateway Signs, this photograph was taken as a kick off to the months activities.

The month will include a focus on duty to report within the first week.

The second week will focus on the prevention of 'Shaken Baby Syndrome' as well as safe sleeping/co-bedding which promotes infants sleeping on their backs and in their own safe environment to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The third week of October will focus on Domestic Violence and impact on child witnesses and the risk of both physical and emotional harm to children experiencing domestic violence in their homes.

The last week of the month will focus on Assets and Protective Factors found in any family. Children throughout the Districts of Nipissing and Parry Sound will be asked to discuss what they believe to be the assets that they believe are important in families or parents. These will be collected and as a closure to the month, these assets will be inserted into purple balloons, filled with helium and let go by children in the community signifying the sharing of children's wishes.

All of the activities planned will include community partners, such as the Child Abuse Committee, the Domestic Violence Committee as well as local, police, health care practitioners and Developmental Service Agencies.
