The excitement is building leading up to the opening face-off for Friday night’s Lakers’ home opener, and Nipissing’s alumni will be there early to get the festivities rolling with a sold out tailgate party.

The alumni tailgate party has almost doubled its targeted attendance, selling more than 350 tickets to the party. Located just outside Memorial Gardens, the party starts at 5 p.m. and runs to 6:30 p.m., allowing fans time to get to their seat in time for the 7 p.m. opening face-off for the Lakers season opener versus the Queen’s Golden Gaels.

Organized by Nipissing’s office of alumni relations the alumni tailgate party is aimed at Nipissing graduates and their families. It features a barbecue, music, a shooting skills area, and free t-shirts and noisemakers.

“Our graduates are obviously pretty excited about Lakers hockey,” said Tina Shunk, Nipissing’s alumni relations officer and the event organizer. “The response has been nothing short of fantastic. It’s going to help create an amazing atmosphere in Memorial Gardens for the game; combined with the Lakers Maniacs, the buses of students and all the North Bay hockey fans, it’s going to be a lot of fun. And the noisemakers we’re giving away are really cool and very loud.”

Some VIPs will also be attending the alumni tailgate party. Members of Nipissing’s first ever hockey team, the undefeated 1967 Nipissing Knights will be there. Perhaps some of their undefeated magic will rub off on the current roster. As well, 101-year-old former North Bay Normal School instructor, Jean Wilson, will be at the tailgate party and the game to cheer on the Lakers.

The game will be special in many regards. Former President Dennis Mock will be on hand to drop the puck, with the help of President Lesley Lovett-Doust and NUSU President Marianne den Haan, launching the Lakers into the regular season.

Nipissing students are also hosting a separate pre-game tailgate party on Friday behind Founders House residence. They’ll have buses departing campus for Memorial Gardens at 6:00 p.m.

Tickets are still available for the game. They can be purchased at the Memorial Gardens box office.
