Mayor's Trust rolls along

Last year, The Future Shop raised over $10,000 for the United Way, and this year the goal is $15,000. Mayor Vic Fedeli helped kick off the event with United Way Sudbury organizer Bobbie Cascanette and Future Shop General Manager Chris Ives. Because there is not a United Way Chapter in the city the 'Mayor's Trust' ensures that all the funds raised through the UW for North Bay charities stay in the Bay and are distributed to the intended charities.

Recently Mayor Victor Fedeli presented $500 from the Mayor's Trust (United Way funds) to the North Bay Golden Age Club which was used to purchase 4 Rollator Walkers. The non-profit group 'The Young at Heart' specializes in fitness for older adults operating out of the Golden Age Club. They found that some of their participants needed walkers, and Maureen Bruce-Payne contacted Mayor Vic to tap into The United Way fund. Canadian Tire was extremely cooperative in keeping four walkers available at their summer sale price, until the funds became available.

Meanwhile, Mayor Victor Fedeli presented $1,000 to Jane Jackson at the North Bay Literacy Council's Annual General Meeting. Again the funds came from the United Way -- Mayor's Trust.

The Literacy Council has launched a new interactive website at www.northbayliteracycouncil.ca and would like you to find out more about becoming a learner, a volunteer or supporter. The North Bay Literacy Council has been improving literacy and essential skills in our community since 1978. They are a nonprofit registered charity. They offer one-to-one tutoring services, small group literacy classes, workplace essential skills training, GED preparation, and a variety of workshops. "If you want to learn.they want to help"
