The North Bay Peace Alliance is hosting author Yves Engler on his book tour for "The Black Book of Canadian Foreign Policy" as part of events around the world marking the International Day for Peace.

The United Nations' International Day of Peace - marked every year on September 21 - is a global holiday when individuals, communities, nations and governments highlight efforts to end conflict and promote peace.

Engler’s presentation will be at 7 pm on Sunday evening at the W.K.P. Kennedy Art Gallery. The author’s talk and audiovisual presentation on Canada's role in the world. Numerous studies have found that Canadians’ self-appraisal of their country’s foreign policy is more positive than any other country. Engler contends that, contrary to the mythology of Canada as a force for good in the world Canada “has been part of the command and control apparatus of the world economic system from its beginning.”

Mayor Vic Fedeli has declared September 21st as the International Day of Peace in the City of North Bay, and issued a proclamation from the Office of the Mayor, joining many other mayors around the world in marking the international effort.

Established by U.N. resolution in 1982, "Peace Day" has grown to include millions of people around the world who participate in all kinds of events, large and small.

In 2009, the first ever “Peace Day 24 Hour Global Broadcast” will highlight the vitally important work of the United Nations and its humanitarian agencies, as well as organizations and individuals around the world dedicated to creating a more peaceful, just and sustainable world. The broadcast will feature Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's message for the International Day of Peace; as well as interviews with present and former high level UN officials and other world leaders. The broadcast will also include videos of the "UN in Action" and various Peace Day events around the planet.
