OTTAWA – Prime Minister Stephen Harper will meet with U.S. President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C. on September 16, 2009.

“I look forward to meeting again with President Obama and discussing the progress that has been made on the global economy and other challenges since his successful visit to Ottawa last February,” said the Prime Minister. "In these challenging times, it is even more important for our two countries to work together for the benefit of our citizens and to cooperate in addressing global economic and security issues.”

Prime Minister Harper and President Obama will focus their discussions on economic recovery measures and initiatives, the upcoming G-20 Summit in Pittsburgh, and energy security and progress under the Canada-U.S. Clean Energy Dialogue.  The leaders will also discuss a number of international security challenges.

The Prime Minister will be joined in Washington by Minister of Foreign Affairs Lawrence Cannon, Minister of the Environment Jim Prentice and Minister of Public Safety Peter Van Loan.

While in Washington, the Prime Minister will meet with the leadership of both houses of Congress as well as members of the Council on Foreign Relations. He will travel to New York on September 17, where he will address the Canadian-American Business Council and the Canadian Association of New York.
