Today Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the 70th anniversary of Canada's entry into the Second World War:

"Seventy years ago today, Canada declared war on Nazi Germany. We became one of the first countries to stand up against the forces of tyranny, oppression and genocide.

"Every Remembrance Day, Canadians formally pause to remember the courage and sacrifice of those Canadian soldiers, sailors and airmen who served bravely during those darkest of times. Every day of every year we should be grateful for what those brave Canadians accomplished. They were, and are, the greatest members of the greatest generation, whose struggle and sacrifice helped build the safer and more secure world we know today.

"Canada has a tradition of leadership for which we can all be proud. In a very dark time, in the world's hour of need, Canadians were among the first to answer the call. This is something for which we should all be grateful. This is something of which we should all be proud."
