Music lovers take note, Nipissing University's Community Choir, Near North Voices, is set to begin its third season this September.

Membership is open to students, staff, faculty and alumni at Nipissing University and Canadore College, as well as to members of the North Bay Community. No audition is required; some previous choral experience and music reading ability are assets.

This season, Near North Voices will be preparing for the Northern Ontario premiere of Voices of Light — a multi-media work for choir, orchestra, soloists, and silent film. The North Bay Symphony is partnering with Near North Voices for the performance.

The Voices of Light premiere will take place in January 2010. It is part of a week-long series of arts and academic events partnering Near North Voices and Nipissing University with artists and organizations in North Bay and the wider community.

“Voices of Light is a wonderfully powerful multi-media performance project,” said Dr. Adam Adler, Near North Voices conductor and Nipissing University professor. “We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with the North Bay Symphony for this performance. It is going to be a terrific experience for everyone involved, and especially our students.”

The first rehearsal for Near North Voices takes place on Wednesday, September 16, 7:00-9:15 p.m. at Nipissing University's Monastery Hall in room M106.

New for the 2009-2010 academic year, Nipissing University students who are enrolled in the Applied Music credit course (voice, piano, guitar) can use Near North Voices as their performing ensemble.
