Family releases name of Hwy 17 crash victim

Our sister paper SooToday.com has learned the identity of the victim of Friday's tragic crash on Highway 17 at Bonfield as Christina Armstrong, a recent grad at Central Algoma Secondary School in Desbarats, Ontario.

A family-posted Facebook memorial page identifies the 19-year-old who was from Thessalon and planning to attend college and had moved to the Sault in June.

According to relatives Armstrong was on her way to her aunt's wedding in Shawville, Quebec when the accident occured.

It was only a few months ago that Christina lost her mother.

"my poor niece, I miss you so much. Love forever," writes Christina's uncle, Richard Migwans, in a Facebook posting.

School friends remember Armstrong for her involvment in dance class, track and the envirothon.

"I will miss Christina's happy smile," writes Suzanne Humphreys. "She always had time to stop and chat and made my final semester at CASS so enjoyable. Even though she was not in my class this year, she always stopped to chat on her way out of her English class next door. Like everyone else, I just can not believe that Christina is gone. I have never met a more caring person."

"Too young to go," added Lori Dumont Laderoute. "She just picked up her grad picture from Stedmans not too long ago. My heart goes out to her family and friends."

Bonfield Township – North Bay OPP and members of the Traffic Technical Collision Investigation (TTCI) are currently investigating a fatal as a result of a motor vehicle collision on Highway 17, approximately 2 km east of Hwy 531. The collision occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. today (Friday, July 31st, 2009).

Three vehicles were involved and six people were transported to local Hospitals for varying injuries. Since, four have been treated and released, one held for further treatment (unknown condition), and a 19 year old female succumbed to her injuries.

At this time, all names are being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Traffic was rerouted via Line 3 South and Trunk Rd., Bonfield and should be re-opened in the following few hours.
