Two highways in Nipissing will be significantly improved with the award of two major rehabilitation contracts by the province.

The projects are part of the Northern Highways Program and will improve safety and traffic flow. They will create 150 direct and indirect jobs.

One initiative will improve more than 18 kilometres of Highway 63 east of North Bay. The work will include resurfacing, grading, drainage and replacement and rehabilitation of select culverts. Carillion Construction has been awarded the $12.1-million contract. The work is scheduled for completion this November.

Another project will upgrade about 15 kilometres of Highway 17 near Mattawa. The work will include the construction of one new eastbound passing lane, bridge rehabilitation and culvert and guide rail replacements. Bonnechere Construction has been awarded the $8.3-million contract. Completion is scheduled for November 2010.

“These projects will improve safety and driving quality for the many residential and industrial drivers who use these important highways every day,” said Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing.

“The Ontario government is also promoting new economic development by improving highways throughout Northern Ontario,” said Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry.

“Improving transportation infrastructure will generate construction jobs and encourage economic growth in the region,” said Jim Bradley, Minister of Transportation.
