The TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes takes place SUNDAY, MAY 31ST at Lee Park in North Bay. The annual event, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s (JDRF) biggest fundraiser, raises both awareness of the disease and funds to continue research for a cure. Families, friends and co-workers will sport their quirkiest costumes and most colourful team t-shirts to show their spirit and passion for JDRF’s pursuit of a cure for type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes, the most severe form of diabetes, is a non-preventable autoimmune disease affecting more than 240,000 Canadians. That number is increasing by three to five per cent each year - the greatest rise among children aged five to nine years. Canada has the sixth highest incidence rate of type 1 diabetes in the world.

More than 45,000 Canadians will participate in the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes at 78 locations across the country. The fundraising goal for 2009 is expected to exceed $8 million.

“The TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes is very important to me and my family,” said Darcy Rumble & Michael Avers, JDRF Walk Ambassadors. “It’s a fun day that gives us the chance to meet other families whose children with type 1 diabetes and it helps JDRF raise money to find a cure for the disease. I hope everyone will come out, or pledge people participating in the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes.”

Walk goes at 10am.
